Duvet Tog Guide

Duvet Tog Guide

What is Tog?

We've all seen tog ratings on duvets and sometimes on other products (such as carpets). Most people have an understanding that it's related to the warmth of a duvet, but how is it measured, how does it relate to other varieties such as filling (e.g. feather vs microfibre duvets) and what is recommended for the different seasons? Read on to find out!

Essentially Tog is a measure of the insulating ability of a duvet. In Ireland and the UK, duvets (aka quilts) usually range from 4.5 Tog up to 15 Tog (though they can be as low as 1 Tog and as high as 16.5 Tog)

It's important to remember that the Tog rating is independent of the filling material. For instance, a 15 Tog Microfibre Duvet will always be warmer than a 10.5 Tog Goose Feather Duvet and vice versa, even though a Goose Feather Duvet is usually more expensive.

How to choose the right duvet for you?

At the end of the day, personal preference is what matters most when selecting the right duvet for you. You may be comfortable wrapped up in a 10.5 tog Duvet even in an Irish Winter if your bedroom is quite warm and your home is well insulated.

However, in general a 13.5 Tog or 15 Tog Duvet is recommended for Winter weather from December to the end of February. 4.5 Tog to 7.5 Tog is recommended for the the summer months from June to August. If you just want one duvet for the entire year, a 10.5 Tog Duvet might just do the trick, or perhaps consider an all weather duvet

How can I save on heating bills?

With rising energy costs, heating and electricity bills are very topical at present. Well, we've got a very simple suggestion to help keep your energy costs low - use an appropriate tog duvet for the season! There's no point turning the heating up to the max in December when you've got a summer weight duvet on your bed. Invest in a winter weight (at least 10.5 Tog) duvet and you likely won't have to heat the room so much! Not only is this good for your wallet, it's also good for the environment.
